Crossing water
Birliv, Birkenhead to Liverpool, an interesting Slow Way. There are other routes that need a ferry but here the boat is not the only 'assisted' means of crossing the Mersey. So, if it's acceptable to use the assistance of a boat it must also be valid to use the bus through the tunnel or even a train. As an aside a survey asks “is swimming involved” not that I would fancy it here but that confirms it’s an acceptable option.
Elsewhere I see that Tilgra, Tilbury to Gravesend, is no longer viable because the ferry has stopped running with the comment that the next available crossing point is Woolwich. As stated above if we can use the assistance of a boat how about using the X80 bus that could take us across the non pedestrian Dartford crossing. Add Avedar, Aveley to Dartford
Take a look at Graarn, Grange over Sands to Arnside. It’s a long way around via Levens so what’s wrong with using the train across the estuary?

I take your point here, Ken. I suppose we could say ferries should be the ONLY ‘assisted’ means of travel if there is no way of walking it. I certainly feel they should be included to allow islands to be part of the network, even though some of the ferry routes, such as Isle of Man to Heysham, have been partially removed. As it happens, I asked Darren specifically to remove the link between Grange and Arnside (there was originally a straight line Graarn Zero, inviting the addition of a route one) because people might attempt to walk across the sands as there is a PRoW marked on the OS Map, and I didn't want anyone to even consider attempting that!!

I like the idea of having a fully connected network, and that can only include island settlements if ferry links are allowed. The South West Coast path has always relied on ferries to cross the bigger estuaries, so it doesn't surprise me that Devon and Cornwall SlowWays do much the same, but in most cases these ferries only form a small part of the route. I can see the point about using buses and trains instead of ferries where this is possible, but most SlowWays routes could just be replaced by a bus journey…
