Oooh! Love that idea Alison. A snail would be perfect!

Maybe we could ask for lots of snail logo/symbol designs and pick the best one?

Great idea.  Also most counties / areas have open studio weeks. e.g. H-Art in Herefordshire in September & Open Studios Cornwall in May.  I have set walking & driving routes to follow around these - it has potential...

And although it seems almost too obvious, a snail logo on waymarkers would provide a clear message.

Perhaps we should have a competition/challenge for a Slow Ways Snail(s) logo?

If there is a working group for this, I would love to get involved. I am Marketing Manager and I enjoy being creative in my spare time. I have few contacts too that could add value to this project.

P.S I like the idea of the symbol being a snail.

OK! Who'd like to join a small group to help create a competition to find a logo/symbol for the Slow Ways? Let's move a conversation into a Skype chat. Email me if you are interested and let's get going.

Great! Are you on Skype Alison? Can you email me your Skype name if you are?

I think a very simple snail outline, probably laser cut or routed into a route marking post would look great. Similar to the NT’s acorns logo.

Perhaps the posts could be made of recycled plastic? They would be more durable and could even be coloured to make the route clearer. Alternatively local greenwood would celebrate regional distinctiveness and the markers could be made by local woodworkers.

Daniel, you might want to have a chat with the award-winning charity Learning through Landscapes (https://www.ltl.org.uk/) if you like the idea of local schools creating community waymarkers.

One of the senior managers is a close friend and I mentioned Slow Ways to her briefly to see whether LTL might be interested in getting involved. She said that they regularly work with schools, finding local artists to facilitate projects, and they are experts in funding applications. My friend said that a project marking the Slow Ways might well appeal to the HLF, and LTL would be able to work with you to secure grants and funding. Basically they act as the ‘middle man’ between initiators of projects, artists and funding bodies.

    Good idea.

When walking in Sweden I've noticed they have a themed often carved sign for a given route that typifies the area that route is in. The intervening points have a coloured dot strategically placed at points where the route changes direction. Its usually a painted dot about 3 inches diameter on a tree or rock (often red, orange or yellow) and they are done so it doesn't matter whether you  walk  from A to B or B to A. ( no pun intended!).

Love the idea of working with local schools Alison. LtL are great. Let's keep developing ideas!

Jane, do you have any photo examples of the dot system? I've not been walking in Sweden before.

    Hi Dan

I sent you some photos of the Swedish waymarkers to your email last night as I could see how to put them on here. So hope you received them

    Regards

    Jane

Thanks for sharing! I just emailed you back.

Can you imagine those painted spots being used in the British landscape?

Hi Marie. No, we've not got one yet. Let's get one going!? For starters, let's organise a competition to find us that snail symbol?

I'd be up for that, Daniel.

    Hi Daniel

For some reason I don't think you're receiving my emails. I've replied to yours with my Skype name. Can you check your spam box please?
