    Slow Ways Support

Hi Richard, thanks very much for asking.

We want people to upload new routes, even if the changes are fairly small. You can download another person's route and edit that.

We've taken this approach for a number of reasons. We don't want people to be editing each others live routes. And at the same time, our small team can't be negotiating and editing thousands of routes made by different people either.

When better routes are shared they should receive stronger reviews and so be used and trusted more.

The 10 criteria are all important. The first 8 are the most important. We simply ask you to use your best judgement. Different places, routes, landscapes and people will desire and require different mixes of those criteria - so please create a route that you would like to walk while keeping them in mind.

    Does that work for you?

Within the first 8 criteria are

    1. be direct
    2. be off road

On Woowok existing route a large section is on the main road, so is accessible, but I know a more enjoyable but slower, longer route that is off the main road. Direct and Off Road clash here, is it worth adding my alternative for comment?

Belated thanks for your reply Dan, yes that works for me; and on that basis Mike I think uploading your alternative WooWok2 so people can review both is the way to go, and what I'll be doing when I get a day to walk both EasHed options.

I'm picking up this old thread as my question is substantially the same.

A while ago I created Longshi three as a corrected version of Longshi one, and I'd like to suggest Longshi one is deleted.

I take the point (above) that “We want people to upload new routes, even if the changes are fairly small” on the grounds that “When better routes are shared they should receive stronger reviews and so be used and trusted more.”  That is the approach I took for Yorhax two, and the system has worked there, with Yorhax two getting its snail ahead of the less safe Yorhax one, and numerous reviewers pointing out the unsafe part of Yorhax one for future users.

However, I wonder if a different approach would be better for Longshi one, i.e. deleting the route now.  I'm suggesting this because:

    1. part of Longshi one is simply inaccurate and that was the main reason (among others) for my making Longshi three

    2. Longshi one doesn't yet have any reviews (other than my damning one) that would be lost if it were deleted.

    Thanks for considering!

    Hello Christine,

Longshi one is an interesting one.  One where I'm 50:50 on whether to remove or leave it.  Please can I ask a couple of questions to help the decision?

    1. Is there a footpath alongside the B1224 or is it all verge walking or something else?

    2. Would you say the inaccuracies in Longshi one are minor or quite significant?

Thank you for creating Longshi three.

    Best wishes,
    Cristie

Yes of course.  And thanks for taking the time to consider, as I see Dan wrote above “our small team can't be negotiating and editing thousands of routes made by different people”.

    1. There's no footpath along the B1224 on either side.  From memory I'm pretty sure there isn't even a walkable verge and therefore it's necessary to actually walk in the carriageway.  It's 60mph and a well-used road including big lorries.

    2. Inaccuracies: I've never been able to find either end of the footpath from Moor Lane to the A1237 underpass, so it may have been either allowed to get overgrown or officially closed when the new bridleway was opened.  The other small inaccuracies relate to safe access on and off the A1237 bridge over the river, which is a bit confusing as you have to double back on yourself.  By drawing a more accurate map here I hope to avoid a. people going the wrong way, of course! and b. people being tempted to cross the busy ring road on the level when they can go safely under it.

Longshi three also spells out the new permissive route in Rufforth village itself.

    Hope that helps.

This is so helpful.  Thank you.

Because Longshi three addresses and corrects all of the issues, including no longer having to potentially walk on the carriageway of the B1224 outside of York, I think it makes sense in this instance to remove Longshi one.  It has now been taken from the network.

    Best wishes,
    Cristie

That's super, I'm sure that's the right decision!  Thank you.  I'm delighted that walkers and wheelers will have access to a safe, accurate route.

Now let's hope some other walkers and wheelers will test it out to vouch for my claims!

Cristie, would it make sense for me to amend the route description for Longshi three a little?  At the moment it defines itself in comparison to Longshi one, which might be confusing to readers now that Longshi one no longer exists.

Oh, I hope someone checks out the route soon too.  Thank you.

Yes, it might make sense to amend it.  What you've written in the description is also really helpful though, explaining the issues and the amends.  How about changing the first sentence to something like:

I have devised this route based on the starter route Longshi one quite closely but with three changes to reflect the reality "on the ground".

That way you're subtly saying it existed, why Longshi three was created and because it was a starter route I think that may stop people from hunting for it or being confused.

    What do you think?

    Best wishes,
    Cristie

That sounds just right Cristie, thanks.  I'll make that amendment in the next day or two!
