New route - Otley to Sun Inn, Norwood
Can a new route be added from Otley to the Sun Inn, Norwood? I'm happy to plot this route.
NB I'd move the end point from the Sun Inn to the car park at Swinsty Reservoir
Thanks Des. We will definitely have this on the list as an area to improve as the network develops. As a follow up, if you were walking direct from Otley to Sun Inn, is there somewhere you would pick as a reasonable connecting place where the path crosses the Ilkley - Stainburn Slow Way? This is one of the trickier decisions when building the network in areas without much in the way of obvious meeting places, and local knowledge is really useful in these situations. It doesn't have to be a settlement if there isn't one, but a local landmark like a bridge or lake, a bus stop, or even a crossroads, can be used if necessary.2
Walking up from Otley I'd go via Clifton. The Ilkley - Stainburn route goes through the village as well, so it would meet there and follow the same path for about 500 meters up to the main road. The grid reference would be around SE 19311 48227 or Eastings Northings 419311 , 448227.1
Thanks Jane and Des.
Yes, all routes need to fit inside the suggested Slow Ways.
I've just added a new topic for suggesting changes to meeting points (start/end points). Please do make any suggestions there!
The above discussion answers a question I had about why some places were included as 'Places' on the website at all when they have no public transport connections or few other obvious reasons to make them final destination points. Most 'Places' are centres of population that have shops, accommodation, public transport etc and therefore a reason to visit, or at least have a method of getting out of to get home or back to the starting point. Others, it now appears, have been created at or near where two routes cross (presumably because the mapping software does not allow routes to cross each other any other way?). If this is so, I would suggest that 'Places' are clearly distinguished from 'Meeting places' on the maps so that people will immediately be able to see that they may not be anywhere near a public transport system so there is no easy way back, or place to stay!1
The immediate answer sadly is 'no' - I'll have a go at explaining. Routes can only be added if they fit into the Slow Way network (the triangles) of connected places. Unfortunately the network at the moment doesn't support routing direct from Otley to Sun Inn, the routing is via Stainburn. We will certainly take into account suggestions for improving the network as it develops.
When we were deciding how to connect the major places in this area (Ilkley, Otley, Harrogate, Pateley Bridge) the Sun Inn was included as a useful intermediate connection place, which enables routes between the towns to become part of a connected network. We try to find meeting points which are easy to locate, and provide refreshment and other facilities, even in remote places, which is why we picked the Sun Inn. I'd be interested in why you think the reservoir car park works better, maybe there are some criteria for meeting points we are missing?0
Wouldn't a route from Otley create a triangle between Otley - Norwood - Ilkley and also Harrogate - Norwood - Otley? It's probably the natural route from Harrogate to Otley. Going via Stainburn seems a bit out of the way.
Re moving the end point... I thought it may be better to start/end at a public car park rather than a car park for pub customers. There are also public toilets at the Swinsty car park but there are no public facilities at the Sun Inn.
The routes from Ilkley - Sun Inn and Stainburn - Sun Inn both already go along the path from the reservoir to the Sun Inn, so they're practically there already.0
Thanks Dan. I've added the meeting point suggestion with some more information, although it said the post needed approving so it's not visible yet.0
