I am struggling to get started as I would like to print a route rather than follow “live” using an app due to limited mobile data usage and access. I tried Strava, map my walk and the os apps but couldn’t upload the box file to the first two and couldn’t download it for offline in the os app. I am assuming this may be because I don’t pay for the premium versions of the apps? Can anyone suggest how I might get a printed route? Thanks.

  Do you have access to a desktop computer or just a phone?

  Hi Sue, a couple of low tech ways to get a printed route would be either to buy the paper OS map and mark the route on with a highlighter pen.  Or you could take screenshots of your route on your ipad and print the screenshots.

  Good shout Flora. You're right Sue - if you had a paid OS account you would be able to download and print a route. I have a couple of other ideas but both are far from perfect.

  You can import GPX routes into Google Maps using your laptop. (Menu > Your Places > Maps > Create Map > Import). You can then take a screenshot and print the screenshot. Unfortunately this will not have all the topographical data that an OS map has - it will just a be a Google Map with a line on it. A benefit from this is that you can display the route on Google Maps on your phone when you're out and about.  

  You could also take screenshots from a website called Bike Hike. Import your GPX file by going to Course Creator > Load Route. The good thing here is that you can load the GPX onto an OS map. The downside is that the OS map is only a quarter of the screen, so you would probably have to take a few screenshots, crop them and arrange them the way you want them. 

  To be honest, Flora's idea of just taking a screenshot and using a highlighter pen sounds the easiest way to go!

  Hi Sue. On every route page if you clock on "more options" there is an option to print. I hope that works for you?

  I use OsmAnd on my phone (Open Street Map for Android).  You can add the maps you want at home by WiFi and not use your data at all.  Of course the maps don't update, but I have never had much problem using a map a year or two old.

  I have been using OsmAnd with downloaded the Slowways route GPXs; my only problem it that it seems to calculate the route afresh and ignores some of the correct waypoints.

  Hi,

  Sounds as though there are many solutions.  Another is that when you're on the route page you can select print via Inkatlas.  It's a free service for up to 6 pages.  Here's a link to a clip I made on how to use it.
