Creating an alternative option for Colaxm

The current Colaxm one seems to be fine. There is however an alternative option that would be worth adding as it uses the link route of the East Devon Way. I'll pop some more details provided by a volunteer below. You would be using the details below to adapt the part of the route between Colyton and Kilmington and then leaving the rest of the route to Axminster as it is on Colaxm one. Please add a comment below if you're happy to make the alternative.

East Devon Way Link Route Kilmington to Colyton (north to south)

Easy walk (wet in winter (2 hrs) 6.5 km

Start location: Kilmington Church (SY272980)

Mainly off-road link route - to East Devon Way at Colyton

Amenities at Kilmington: farm shop with café (take care crossing the main A35 road), two pubs, café, accommodation, bus stop and filling station with shop

Description: - [6] Start near Kilmington Church & Village Hall - head south and take first right just before the bridge over the stream - along the minor road The Street - continue up along “The Street” - then Springhead Lane - When you reach the stream at the end of the road - take the public footpath past the stream - proceed up through the woods - on emerging onto the road at the top turn left - soon you come to a public grassy space with a seat - turn right and then left into the paved track to [5] Shute House - walk past the front (north side) of the house - follow signs and zigzag down the slope - over stile then a sleeper footbridge - pass through two metal kiss gates and progress diagonally across the field gently up hill - over the stile and turn left down the farm track - over stile - continue down to the minor road - at this junction by the grassy triangle turn right for Seaton Junction - by the old station you will find a [4] footbridge over the railway line (this is the main Waterloo to Exeter line) - cross the footbridge - then through the woods - cross the field, slightly to the right, down to pass between the barn and the house - turn left up the concrete track - opposite the stile on the left turn right into the field to [3] seat in a field - cross the field past the seat and follow the hedge downhill to the left - over the footbridge (this next bit of field can be wet at times) - cross the next footbridge and turn left to follow the Umbourne Brook downstream - stile - footbridge - diagonally across field to the stile on the right - continue diagonally across next field to the footbridge - cross footbridge - turn left and follow hedge line - footpath gate with plank bridge either side - stile with plank bridge either side - leave [2] Umbourne Brook and diagonally cross field uphill passing to the right of the telegraph pole - though the two metal footpath gates - cross field diagonally to the left - over the stile in the corner onto a minor road - turn left downhill on the minor road to [1] Chantry Bridge on the East Devon Way at Colyton - you can follow the East Devon Way into Colyton for refreshment or turn right just before the bridge for Farway - about 1 km upstream you will meet the junction of the East Devon Way with the link route to Beer - turn left over the footbridge for Beer or carry straight on for Farway and beyond.

I have attempted to create a new route as described here. Firstly it is very difficult from my desk to see all the stiles and plank bridges described, but I have done my best, using Google Street View where possible, and zooming in on the OS Aerial View. Secondly, as far as I can make out, this is pretty much a description of the existing route. There may be very small changes in terms of the used footpaths being slightly out of date across fields, but I can't find anything that is significantly different.

The East Devon Way passes East-West through Colyton and could possibly be used as part of a completely different route (Colyton, East Devon Way heading west through Musbury and Bulmoor, then lanes north to Abbey Gate or else Wyke Green, then into Axminster somehow. But this isn't what has been requested!

May be better tackled by a local.

Hi Mary,

Thanks for taking a look, you're a star. Particularly with all the stiles and bridges.

I think you're right to leave it for just now and see if a local takes up the challenge. I took a look at the Musbury option and think it makes up part of Collym one https://beta.slowways.org/Route/Collym/1051#reviews.
