The best place to answer your first 2 questions is from Ordnance Survey itself. The FAQs are here: OS Maps app FAQ | Common problems answered (ordnancesurvey.co.uk)

Can you download OS Maps onto PCs and Macs? That is a good question and I'm not sure that you can. The first thing to remember is that you need to pay Ordnance Survey to allow access to their maps.

There are two forms of payment - subscriptions to allow you to use the maps on phones and tablets, and buying paper maps that will allow for an offline download of that map. All OS Explorer (1: 25 000 scale) and OS Landranger (1: 50 000 scale) series paper maps have a digital download included.

For your third question, you are going to need a mapping application that will allow you to read maps, create routes and download tracks from your device.

For the Mac I would suggest gpxsee GPXSee download | SourceForge.net or Viking Viking GPS data editor and analyzer download | SourceForge.net

There are many applications you can look at though, here is a full list gpx mapping free download - SourceForge

If you are looking for maps, you'll need to google open street maps, but that's for another post I think. :)

Just to add - I use Talky Toaster maps with Garmin Basecamp (on a PC) and the Garmin Etrex 30x. I also have the OS Map app with subscription for my phone.

PS. I would read this thread for information on downloading a GPX route onto a phone.
